There is no cure for acne, but can be treated completely. Vitamin itself does not clear up acne but they support a healthier diet and can offset some causes including stress, poor nutrition, and hormonal imbalances. Our body needs complete nutrition to promote healthy skin and to prevent acne. The fact is most people are deficient in vitamins, minerals and herbs that are important for your body to function properly. They are powerful antioxidants that flush out free radicals and toxins from your body. Some even have antibacterial effects and promote immunity. Both of which are important in keeping your pores clean of clogging toxins and in healing the damaged skin tissue. However, it is important to note that an excess of this vitamin can also create pimples.
Vitamin A
Vitamin A strengthens the protective tissue of the skin and prevents acne formation by reducing sebum (oil) production. It is essential for the maintenance and repair of the tissue which the skin and mucous membranes are made of. Vitamin A is also a powerful antioxidant that relieves your body of oxidative stress caused by free radicals. As an antioxidant, vitamin A also rids your body of toxins and free radicals, including the skin, of harmful toxins therefore helping to clear the skin of many problems, including acne. Vitamin A is usually taken in conjunction with carotenoids which enhances its effects against acne. A deficiency in vitamin A can actually cause acne.
Never combine strong vitamin A medications with other acne cream (such as cream that contain benzoyl peroxide.) that could cause drying. Over dose of vitamin A could cause nausea, itchiness, irritability, vomiting headaches, menstrual problems, and dizziness. If taken in high doses it could also cause liver damage, pain in the muscles and bones. Do not take vitamin A supplements if you are pregnant.
Vitamin A is found naturally in variety of foods such as carrots, dark green leafy vegetables, yellow fruits like oranges and bananas, liver, milk and egg-yolk.
Vitamin B
The group of Vitamin B has a specific role in promoting healthy skin, and also helps you relieve anxiety and stress, and stress can be a major factor that can trigger acne. The vitamins in the B complex are Thiamine (B1), Riboflavin (B2), Niacinamide(B3), Pantothenic Acid (B5) and Pyridoxine (B6) and Cyanocobalamin. Each one of these vitamins has a specific role in promoting healthy skin, as well as overall health.
Thiamine (B1) acts as an antioxidant, enhances your circulation, and assists your body to properly digest the food you eat. Vitamin B1 can aid your body in absorbing other vitamins. You should take 100 mg of Thiamine thrice daily to combat acne.
Vitamin B1 is found in baked potato, beef kidney/liver, brewer's yeast, flour; rye and whole grain, dried garbanzo beans (chickpeas), ham, dried kidney beans, dried navy beans, orange juice, oranges, oysters, peanuts, peas, raisins, brown and raw rice, wheat germ and whole-grain products.
Riboflavin (B2) works with Vitamin A to maintain and improve the mucous membranes in your digestive tract. It is also essential for healthy skin, hair and nails. Vitamin B2 deficiency can be a cause of acne and it also plays a role in growth and energy release. You may find that this dose also helps with migraine headaches.
Vitamin B2 is found in bananas, beef liver, dairy products, eggs, enriched breads, fortified cereals, ham, mixed vegetables, pork, tuna and wheat germ.
Niacinamide (B3) is also another essential ingredient important for healthy skin; it enhances circulation and helping your body with the metabolism of carbohydrates, fats, proteins and can also provide a more efficient exchange of toxins and nutrients into and out of you cells. A deficiency in Niacinamide will cause acne but may cause flushed skin at high doses.
Vitamin B3 is found in beef liver, brewer’s yeast, chicken, dried beans/peas, fortified cereals, halibut, peanut butter, peanuts, pork, ham, potatoes, salmon, soybeans, swordfish, tuna and turkey.
Pantothenic acid (B5) is noted second in effectiveness only to vitamin A derivatives. Vitamin B5 helps reducing stress, in effect indirectly reducing acne, which stress is known to cause. It is also enhances the circulation of cells involved in healing wounds and is required for the proper function of the adrenal glands. It has been shown to counteract the hormonal imbalance at the heart of acne formation for most people and is known to increase metabolism and stamina, as well as reduce pain and swelling in rheumatoid arthritis. It also plays a vital role in the production of Coenzyme A, which is necessary in order to metabolize skin oil.
Vitamin B5 is found in avocados, bananas, blue cheese, broccoli, chicken, collard greens, eggs, lentils, liver, lobster, all kinds of meats, milk, oranges, peanut butter, peanuts, peas, soybeans, sunflower seeds, wheat germ and whole-grain products.
Pyridoxine (B6) is crucial in the functioning of your immune system and your antibody production. It plays a role in metabolizing proteins, sugars, and fatty acids. A deficiency of vitamin B6 can be a cause of acne.
Vitamin B6 is found naturally in bananas, blackcurrants, watermelon, leek, green pepper, and sweet potato, avocado and chick peas.
Vitamin C
Vitamin C is needed for the production of collagen (connective tissue in skin and bones); it also aids the absorption of iron and speeds up healing which. Vitamin C is also an antioxidant that protects against infection and increases immunity which helps to eradicate acne. The body uses more vitamin C if you smoke or take antibiotics or oral contraceptives. Found naturally in blackcurrant, blackberry, grapefruit, lemon, oranges, Brussels sprouts. Bioflavonoid is the only vitamin that has an anti-inflammatory effect. If you have diabetes, ask your doctor about the proper dosage. Vitamin C is an excellent component of your vitamins for acne treatment.
Vitamin C is found naturally in citrus fruits, blackcurrant, blackberry, grapefruit, lemon, oranges, and Brussels sprouts, guava, mangos, tomatoes, strawberries, broccoli, cabbage peppers, collards potatoes, green peppers, kale, papayas, rose hips, spinach, tangerines and watercress.
Vitamin E
Vitamin E is important for skin repair and retards cellular aging. Vitamin E prevents cell damage by preventing polyunsaturated fats from being oxidized. It is an antioxidant that enhances healing and tissue repair. It also helps with the absorption of vitamin A and prevents cell damage by inhibiting the oxidation of lipids (fats) and the formation of free radicals.
Vitamin E is found naturally in almonds, asparagus, avocados, Brazil nuts, broccoli, canola oil, corn, corn oil/margarine, cottonseed oil, fortified cereals, hazelnuts (filberts), peanuts/peanut oil, Safflower nuts/oil, soy bean oil, spinach, sunflower seeds, walnuts, wheat germ and wheat germ oil.
Vitamin K
Vitamin K is also known as phytonadione, it can fortify the skin, speed healing and diminish bruises. It can aid in repairing skin that has been damaged by dryness or discoloration due to acne. Vitamin K aids in blood clotting and the repair of broken capillaries, and is popular in anti-aging medications for its ability to diminish fine lines, spider veins, and dark circles under the eyes. When foods are processed or cooked, very little of vitamin K contained in foods is lost. Great sources of this vitamin include dark leafy greens, oils from green plants, and some dairy products.
Vitamin K is found in alfalfa, asparagus, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, Cheddar cheese, green leafy lettuce, liver, seaweed, spinach and turnip greens.
Chromium
Chromium aids can combat acne by reducing infections in the skin. If you have a deficiency in any of these vitamins or minerals, chromium is the most likely candidate. To get the adequate amount of chromium in your diet, chromium should be taken in supplemental form called chromium picolinate or chromium polynicotinate as chromium is not easily absorbed from food and is lost during processing, and high quantities of sugar can cause a loss of chromium from the body.
Zinc
Zinc is a mineral not a vitamin which is essential for absorption of vitamin A and also regulates levels of vitamin E. Zinc can help prevent acne because it aids in regulating the activity of oil glands, in the healing of tissues and helps prevent scarring. It is an antioxidant which helps to fight and prevent the formation of free radicals. It also boosts the immune system and helps kill acne bacteria. Acne can be a sign of Zinc deficiency because a lack of zinc has shown to increase the production of male hormones. Zinc is a heavy metal; users should exercise care if taking Zinc supplements because too much Zinc can cause severe stomach pains.
Selenium
Selenium is an antioxidant that inhibits the oxidation of fats and protects vitamin E. Antioxidants are important because they prevent the spread of oxidative cells that can attack cellular function in all major systems of the body. Selenium is needed for skin elasticity and can also aid acne relief through diminishing inflammation of the skin. Use caution if taking Selenium supplements.
Gamma-Linolenic Acid (GLA)
GLA-containing essential fatty acids taken from evening primrose, blackcurrant and borage seed oils are effective in treating rheumatoid arthritis. Gamma-Linolenic Acid (GLA) is a rich source of polyunsaturated fatty acids that is needed by the body to produce beneficial prostaglandins. It may assist in the balancing of the body’s hormonal system and relieve discomfort associated with PMT symptoms. It is essential to many bodily cellular functions. It improves skin conditions and relief minor skin irritations, keeping skin supple and radiant. Discontinue use if headache, indigestion or nausea occurs.
While using vitamin and mineral follow dosage as instructed. Over dose may be dangerous, discontinue use if side effect like nausea, indigestion, headache etc. occurs. Call physician when convenient.
