The Check-Up Lists For Woman

Due for your year-end exam? Don't turn int a hypochondriac and order a battery of test you don't need.

You may not need:

MAMMOGRAMS - Younger women tend to have denser breast tissue that makes lumps harder to spot through mammograms. But you can't skip it if you're 35; most women need their first mammogram at that age, then annually after 40. These breast x-rays can detect lumps and changes that are too small to be picked up through a physical examination.

COLONOSCOPY - Unless you're above 50, have a family history of colon or rectal cancer, or a personal history of inflammatory bowel disease, ask your doctor for various less invasive ways to test for colorectal cancer and polyps. This procedure requires a doctor to view the entire length of your colon through a long flexible scope inserted through your rectum while you are sedated.

BONE DENSITY TEST - Osteoporosis begins late, so even if you're not getting enough calcium, it's not likely to show up on your test till you're older. Start going for annual tests at age 60, especially if you're underweight, post-menopausal, have a history of fractures, or a family history of osteoporosis. This quick scan of your lower back, hip area, wrist or heel measures bone density, indicating your risk fracture.

Go For:

  1. CHOLESTEROL BLOOD TEST - Schedule a check if you smoke, have diabetes or count oily food as your must have breakfast food. If heart disease runs in your family, get tested regularly from age 20.

  2. PELVIC EXAM AND PAP SMEAR - Have a pelvic exam every year and a Pap smear once every one to three years. Every Woman needs these regularly from age 21 or within three years after she first has sex, whichever comes first.

  3. BLOOD PRESSURE TEST - Have your first test at age 18, then at least once every two years, especially if high blood pressure runs in your family.
DENTAL CHECKUP - Schedule two appointments a year to check for cavities and gum problems.

  4. EYE EXAM - Changes in your vision can occur within a year so get twice- yearly checks.

  5. BREAST EXAM - Don't miss that annual check, especially if breast cancer runs in your family.
